Not as the primary reason. Perhaps I also hated them, for having attempted to kill me and my friends in the first place.

[she frowns, twisting some hair around her hand.]

We wound up traveling together for a time. I didn't know it, but he was a member of a group we've been opposed to for a while. He didn't plan to find us, but he could have run off and hid or gone another way. Instead, he tried to become our friend, learn more about us, so he could report back.

...He had his reasons to hate my friends and I. Different sides in a war that is more complex than what is simply right and what isn't. But when he was caught, the person he chose to hurt to get away was the one member of our little group who had no part in any of it.
