There are ten separate metals or alloys that people can use to fuel their powers, where I'm from. Most people aren't able to use any of these materials, but for those who do have the power, it's almost always the case that can only use one. For example - pewter for increased strength, or brass to lessen other people's emotions. When someone uses the term Mistborn, it means they can use each of the ten metals, not just one.

They're sought after, for the most part. Noble families typically have many children through mistresses to try and produce a Mistborn heir. But for people from the lowest class, like me... It's illegal for a child to be Mistborn. Or it was in the last government, before it fell. Things have been different for around a year now.
